Mellynbakes Ordering Service – Our new range of gluten free food continues to fly out of the shop. After a long search, I have finally found a most fantastic range of delicious food, all both gluten and wheat free. Mellynbakes really have mastered delicious pastry and produce an extensive range of really tasty food.

Interest in their food has grown at such a speed that I have decided to put their entire list onto my website. This way you can order your bespoke order to go straight into your fridge or freezer. There is an extensive list to choose from. Pie and Mash Night – Last month’s Pie and Mash went fantastically well with a reserved list already building for the next one – In line with The 1st Cambridge Entertainment Extravaganza, 16th – 24th June 2012‏ – We will be working in conjunction with them to bring you a local musician who will come and entertain us while you enjoy your feast ! Only a few places left now, so call to book early !

Lemon Curd – May sees the return of Alpha Farms home-made lemon curd, just like your ‘mama used to make ‘ ??! Well either way it’s delicious and sitting in my fridge now! Needs eating as its fresh eggs so a beautiful smooth taste, has to be tried.

There are two special occasions on our horizon, and The Pickled Village are helping us to celebrate with two new products.

Also their ‘Hot Runner’ please see attached for image. A spicy and mustardy chutney with a strong chilli finish! A sure-fire winner with summer salads, pork terrines or in a humble ham sandwich. A perfect picnic partner.  Both in by the end of the week!

And lastly, I just thought I would flag up that Hope Street are having it’s own Jubilee Party on the 3rd June – there will be a bar b que, salads made by local residents, music, local bands, stalls and entertainment. Easter has been and gone and we are now fast approaching summer. For those who don’t warm towards direct sunlight, I am making a small seating area out the back, where you can sit and enjoy a lunch. A big hit on the menu at the moment are my ‘Greek slices’ – made to an authentic Cretan recipe, Borakisky Foods supply us with healthy slices of both a home grown spinach and goats cheese feta & a potato, courgette and herb slice. All sandwiched together between sheets of handmade olive oil pastry. These come accompanied with a green and bean salad. An enjoyable and healthy lunch or take a slice home with you for an easy supper.

Jo, from Afternoon Tease, who has been supplying us with cake for our Pie and Mash Nights, is now also gracing our counter with one of her cakes each week. Last week saw a whooping big 10inch Victoria sponge!!! So big I needed to get a larger cake dome! How does she do it? Other popular cakes have included, sticky toffee pear cake, lemon and poppy seed drizzle cake and dark cherry and chocolate cake. Jo will bake to order too, so if you have a birthday or special occasion coming up then let me know and you can discuss it with her.

Breckland Orchard has launched a new range of cordials – ‘Posh Squash’ – If they are as popular as their ‘Posh Pop’ range then we better watch out. Flavours include, Plum &Cherry, Rhubarb & Ginger and Lemon & Mint, thrust quenching for those river side picnics! Also new in their cream soda with a dash of rhubarb – in their words and ours, ‘ it’s absolutely to die for’ !

Mellybakes, our new gluten free bakers are still wowing us with their absolutely delicious range goodies. Their quiches, pies, biscuits, cakes, savoury muffins, brownies and frangipanes are just flying off the shelves! After three years of working with lots of cooks working to perfect baking for the gluten free market, I think I have found a complete winner! I challenge you to taste the difference?

Our next Pie and Mash Night is the 2^nd May – if you haven’t tried Pavitt’s Pies yet then I highly recommend them. If you enjoy them then come and spend an intimate evening, 12 spaces only, at one of our nights in the shop. You can choose from a choice of six fillings, three are vegetarian, and then Carrie Pavitt will serve it with scrummy mashed potato, gravy and peas. You will be welcomed with a glass of fizz and can bring your own wine to suit your taste. Urban Larder teams up with Mellyn Bakes

A gluten free feast for the eye and the fork

Urban Larder, Mill Road Cambridge, is SO excited to announce that after much ‘Tweeting’ and searching, Mellyn Bakes, the specialist gluten free catering company, is to spread a little culinary joy to Larder customers, providing fabulous food, both gluten and wheat free. Based, near Cambridge, this specialised company aims to provide exceptional, simply delicious food, made from high quality ingredients.

Polly Plouviez, owner, Urban Larder says: “For those with coeliac or wheat intolerance the required food restrictions and lack of choice can leave you feeling a little disillusioned, however Mellyn Bakes is really exciting. So far I have sampled its frangipani fruit tarts; red onion and brie tart; chicken and mushroom pie; cheese and bacon muffin and scrumptious raison and fudge cookies! The entire experience blew me away! I get to taste a lot of gluten free products on the road to finding the best and now I feel I can stop looking. You will share my feelings too I guarantee it!”

Producing sweet and savoury gluten and wheat free baked goods, the new Urban Larder supplier can also adapt its products, on request, to suit those who have lactose or cow’s milk protein intolerance. With over 40 years of experience, Mellyn Bakes products are free of artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. Working with an array of flours, each recipe is a feast for the eye and the fork.

Urban Larders first order is set to arrive on the Wednesday 7^th March and will include quiches, pies, muffins and biscuits for the counter, together with some of its yummy frangipani tarts. I will be ordering lots for the freezer too and will carry a list of the range of products so if you wish to place an order for your freezers, a dinner or birthday party, you can. Gluten free food has really turned a corner here. I choose to eat gluten free, as it’s so much lighter and easier to digest, I really think this is the way forward in healthy eating. No bloating, heaviness, tiredness and less calorific which can’t be bad. All very exciting for all eaters of good and local food!”

It’s approaching  Valentine’s night and we nearly have a full house for our ‘Pie and Mash’ night, we could be persuaded to squeeze in another two people if pushed – but don’t despair, there is a second chance to enjoy some wonderful food and company on the 8th March – during National Pie Week, a week I am sure you already had marked on your calendar’s. So embrace the ‘love of pies’ with us and Pavitt’s Pies of Cambridge – choose from these wonderful fillings:

Beef and Ale, Pork and Chorizo, Piemosa – (Samosa in a pie) ,Mushroom, Thyme and Onions, Chicken and Mushroom.

The pies come with posh mash (chump), peas and gravy – followed by a slice of light cake. BYO bottle applies – the evenings will start at 7.30pm ending around 10pm. Nibbles on arrival and all at a Pietastic £15.00 ahead, £3.50 for corkage per bottle.
